About La Cachette

La Cachette is a picturesque cottage in the heart of the Loire Valley, now designated as a UNESCO world heritage site.  The cottage, located in the village of Fontevraud L’Abbaye, in the Regional Nature Park of Loire-Anjou-Touraine, is just a few minutes’ walk from the famous 12th century Fontevraud abbey, said to be the largest in Europe, and which, since 1975, has become the Cultural Centre of West France, as a venue for regular concerts, plays and exhibitions.

The abbey is famous as the burial place of King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lionheart, whose effigies lie in the vast abbey chapel.

Fontevraud lies between the major towns of Saumur and Chinon.  It provides an excellent base for exploring the Loire Valley, the wines and food of the region, the famous chateaux and the ancient towns and villages, including many officially recognised as ‘the most beautiful villages of France’.

La Cachette is located at the edge of the village, overlooking open farmlands and nestled into the forests of the Nature Park. Together, La Cachette and Fontevraud L’Abbaye offer a splendidly quiet and comfortable haven from which to enjoy the rich history (French and English), architecture, culture and beautiful landscape of this remarkable region.
